Scripps College, a women’s liberal arts college with a strong interdisciplinary tradition, invites applications for a tenure-track position in the department of French Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin in fall 2019.

We are seeking candidates in the field of French Cultural Studies with an emphasis on French or Francophone Visual Culture (e.g. painting, sculpture, architecture but also, landscaping, ritual, performance, iconography, cinema, photography, bande dessinée, digital arts, new media, etc.). We will consider applicants working in any historical period and on any geographical area of France or the Francophone world. A secondary research interest in gender or queer studies is an asset.

The successful candidate will be a dynamic teacher-scholar with a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching all levels of French language as well as courses in literature and culture at the undergraduate level. The teaching load at Scripps is four courses per academic year, including one (and occasionally two) language courses.  Advising on senior theses is expected as well as participation in the Scripps Core Curriculum in Interdisciplinary Humanities. Native or near-native fluency in French and English is required. Ph.D. required. Preference will be given to applicants with a commitment to the College’s goal of improving higher education for underrepresented students.

Review of applications will begin October 15th, 2018 and applications must be received by November 19th, 2018 to be considered. Applicants should send a letter of application, C.V., detailed statement on their teaching philosophy, detailed statement on their research agenda, and three current letters of reference to Interfolio: https://apply.interfolio.com/54106.
