The 1st International Symposium on Media and Cultural Studies (SMCS): Shaping Public Opinion
on 12-13 October 2018
Venue: Faculty of Letters and Humanities, Sfax, Tunisia
The symposium is the first interdisciplinary event that aims to bring together scholars from all over the world to share their experience and research on different areas related to media and cultural studies, with particular attention to shaping public opinion. It is an opportunity for researchers at different stages and levels of their academic careers, as well as Ph.D. students, to exchange views and thoughts about recent trends and perspectives in various disciplines. Proposals for sessions or individual papers pertaining to the following themes and areas are welcome, but any other suggested themes that match with media and cultural studies will be appreciated.
— Media and Public Opinion in the Digital Age
— Migration, Identities, Inclusion and/or Exclusion of “the Other”
— Literature and Ideology
— Discourse Analysis and Public Opinion
— Framing Public Opinion and Minorities
The Pragmatics of Deception and Manipulation
Abstracts for panels or individual papers of no more than 250 words, with name of participant and institutional affiliation, along with a short biography, should be sent to smcs2018flshs@gmail.com no later than 15th July, 2018. Notification of acceptance will be sent by 30th July, 2018. A selection of accepted papers will be considered for publication after review by the scientific committee following the event.
NB: Prof. Wayne Wanta, Department of Journalism at University of Florida, Gainesville will be a guest speaker in the event, presenting a plenary speech entitled “Trump’s Troublesome Twitter Tweets: Alternative Facts and Mass Communication Theory.” He will also be moderating a workshop on the main tools to detect media effect on public opinion.
